Do Your Level Best!
Finding the
reading level that’s “Just Right” for you
Every child can excel in
reading when they have the keys to identify and choose books that
are “just right” for their individual level. When it comes to
children’s reading and writing skill development, what works for one
will not necessarily work for all.
“Do
Your Level Best” is a fun and engaging assembly program designed
to reinforce the tools necessary for students to find their own best
practices, while instilling in them confidence as they approach the
process of reading.
Child psychologist Dr.
Jennifer Guttman, and performer/educator, John Fogarty, have created
a dynamic and informative program that motivates children to develop
reading at their own pace. Using his own early reading challenges as
a backdrop, John Fogarty uses original music and skits to entertain
and inform students while giving them valuable tools to make them
feel good about their individual reading levels. Principles of
Balanced Literacy are used within the program as building blocks to
demonstrate that reading is accessible to all students.
This
is a 45-minute program offered as two shows: Grades K-2 and 3-6. A
three-minute animated video featuring an original character, “The
Scrambler,” will be shown at the beginning of the performance. The
Scrambler corrupts children’s books by scrambling the stories.
During the program, students learn they “have the power” to save
their books from The Scrambler simply by picking up a “Just Right”
book and reading. The video is available for preview. Study guides
are also available on request.
